C

edar has been a popular fence material for a long time, bearing a reputation for rot- and insect-resistance that gives
it excellent longevity. In particular, Western Red Cedar (WRC)-grown primarily in the Pacific Northwest-has
established itself as a reliable material, even in damp climates (like the Pacific Northwest or Houston, Texas). It
is in demand and priced accordingly. Other domestic varieties such as Incense Cedar (IC), Northern White Cedar (NWC),
and Eastern Redcedar (ERC), although not quite as resistant and long-lasting as WRC, are also sold for fencing in the U.S.
Periodically over the past three decades,
during times when demand for WRC outstripped supply and prices rose, imported
wood fence pickets have appeared in the

U.S. market, sold as Japanese Cedar, Chinese
Cedar, or just plain 'cedar.' When they first
were imported in the late 80s and early 90s,
they gained a bad reputation for warping,

mold, deterioration and short-service life,
as well as rather crude milling.
