MINDING YOUR BUSINESS

5 LOCAL SEO FACTORS THAT
CAN BOOST YOUR RANKING
RICHARD FENCIL, DIRECTOR
Contractor Nation and the Treehouse Internet Group

A

s a fencing contractor, you'd like your
website to show up when people
are searching for fencing services
anywhere in your service area, not
just the town where you're located.
You'd like to rank on the first page of the
search results, even in the coveted Map Pack.
Improving your chances of showing
up as a local contractor requires Local
SEO, a specialized form of Search Engine
Optimization. Local SEO specifically
focuses on those factors Google uses to
determine who shows up in the Map Pack.
Ranking in the Map Pack has a separate,
but similar, set of SEO factors as your website. The top factors include:
* An owner-verified profile on Google My
Business (GMB) with photos and reviews;
* Choosing the proper categories for your
business on GMB;
* Citation quantity and accuracy on sites
all around the web;
* Information on your own website;
* Links from other websites.
The first thing to consider with all SEOs is
that there isn't only one way to do it. The list
above is in no particular order, nor does it
cover all the factors of Local SEO. However,
optimizing these five points will give you a
significant lift.

contractor. To get a five-star reputation,
you need to provide five-star service on
every interaction with the consumer, not
only in the installation of the fence. All
communication - on the phone, at the
sales appointment, in any follow up including after-installation service - should
be stellar.

PROPER CATEGORIES FOR
YOUR BUSINESS ON GMB
Make sure your category on GMB is
"fence contractor." If you offer other services, select the most accurate choice for
those as well.

CITATION QUANTITY AND ACCURACY
ON SITES ALL AROUND THE WEB
A citation refers to a listing in a directory
or other site, "citing" your business name,
address and phone. This is called NAP,
and having a consistent NAP is crucial for
local SEO ranking. This one is a little tricky
because the information about your business changes over time and, on the internet that gets messy quickly. InfoGroup,
Acxiom, and Localeze are a few sites that
syndicate listings across the web, often
incorrectly. Correct your business name,
address and phone information (NAP) with
these sites first and then dig into larger

OWNER-VERIFIED PROFILE
ON GOOGLE MY BUSINESS
Make sure that you have verified your
profile with Google. If you haven't created a
GMB profile, now is the time to do it. Then
create a schedule to upload photos. It doesn't
have to be too often; every other month or
quarterly may be enough. Lastly, regularly
ask your customers if they would write you a
review on Google - as well as other important
third-party sites, such as Facebook, Yelp and
Home Advisor (if you're using them).
Of course, reviews matter, and the
stars pop to anyone looking for a home
