TED EYSENBACH
President, CLFMI

I

know that the 2016 elections took a lot
out of everybody. Our CLFMI Annual
Meeting last November actually began
on election day. We held an election
night party so our members could watch
the results together. It was quite an event.
Turns out we have a lot of members on both
sides of the political spectrum. Having them
all in one room at the same time was so challenging that we had to make a compromise
to watch CNN for 30 minutes, then switch to
Fox News for 30 minutes.
The reason I'm mentioning this to you is
that even though our members were split
on which of the presidential candidates
they felt was best qualified, they all realize
that it's time to move on from that election
in a lot of different ways. It's not just that
ideological differences have to be set aside.
In the business world, it's time to start
adjusting to the new realities of what the
economic impact is going to be from decisions that are being made right now in the
new administration. No industry is going
to be left untouched, and those of us in
the construction/fencing industry need to
pay careful attention to what direction this
administration is taking.
The president said during his campaign
that things like infrastructure, commerce
and trade were going to be priority issues
during the first part of his presidency. I
know that many in our industry heard
those words and started thinking about
all the work that will be coming our way.
But we are all smart enough to know that
even if these programs are priorities for

the president, the money allocated for
new projects under these programs won't
be getting to the fence industry for a very
long time in many cases. In the meantime,
it's important for us to keep tracking the
progress of these programs while we're out
there concentrating on getting today's work
done and hoping there's work available for
us tomorrow.
As I said in my previous column, we
at CLFMI are doing our best to not only
prepare for action on the changes that are
coming to our industry, but to be ahead of
them. We're developing plans of action to
be ready to meet the needs of the various
industries that will likely be impacted by
political decisions in the next few years.
We are talking to the leaders and decision
makers of these industries and trying to
learn what their biggest concerns are and
what their greatest challenges are. CLFMI
is trying to position chain link fence as the
perimeter security product of choice not

only in the current market but in the market that is being created by a combination
of government construction activity and
incentives to the private sector.
As always, in order to assure these decision makers that their priorities can be
addressed through chain link systems, it's
going to take a true team effort among the
manufacturers, suppliers and contractors
in our industry. We (the manufacturers)
are going to do everything we can to create a greater demand for chain link products and be prepared to deliver them to
the marketplace. We need your help in
not only selling our products and installing our products, we also need your help
in identifying these new markets as they
are created.
You can be sure we're following the
money. As always, we look forward to working with you as partners in profitability in
the fencing industry as we try to get some
of that money coming our way. ■
