SOLVING PUZZLE
THE

The complexity of autism, and the diversity of those it affects, can make those on the spectrum difficult pieces to fit into
the average workplace-Tony Lesenskyj designed a special one that could fit them all.

C

ollaborative space-where leisure and social time are built right into the work environment-has been gaining
momentum since companies like Google began adding swimming pools and climbing walls to their offices. It
affords employees the opportunity to blow off a little steam amid the stress of the work day, which is nice to have.

But what if it was something your employees needed? Literally.
Tony Lesenskyj is a fencing professional.
An AFA member for decades, he founded
LMT Mercer Group in 1987. In that time,
the Lawrenceville, New Jersey, company
has grown into the largest manufacturer of
vinyl fence, deck and railing accessories in
North America.
He also has a son with autism. And it
was with Colin, now 18, in mind, that he
began to think about ways in which he could

successfully fold his son into the family business with an approach that suited both Colin
and the company. The plan he came up with
not only served the Lesenskyj family's needs,
it's now primed to serve families, businesses
and communities across the nation.

THE CHALLENGE
Like many people on the spectrum, Colin
has difficulty communicating with the outside
world. And, says his father, the outside world
has difficulties communicating with Colin.

"What happens is that up to the age of
17 or 18, these young people are in school
all day, but then they begin to introduce
job training," he explains. "I noticed all the
places Colin was being sent-making pizza
boxes, folding towels at the hospital-they
were okay jobs, but as communication issues
would inevitably arise, the anxiety level goes
up, too. It gets to a point where bad behaviors
can happen."
Lesenskyj wanted to bring Colin to work
with him at LMT, "But it's a factory," he
