SETTING YOURSELF APART
FROM THE COMPETITION

The importance of having a properly educated,
experienced and dedicated workforce for the
professional fence company has never been higher

o help individuals in the fence and access control industry gain the knowledge and skills to differentiate themselves in today's highly competitive market, the American Fence Association (AFA) has developed and offers
certification programs and schools. Through these education offerings, contractors can keep up with the latest
technology and tools, enhance their status in the business community and improve the image of the industry.
"It's very important that professional
companies in our industry differentiate
themselves from those with less experience and who are not committed to longterm success," explains Todd Thomas,
managing director of the International
Door Association (IDA), with Long and

Associates, Inc., an association management company based in West Milton, Ohio.
Long and Associates provides associations
in a variety of industries with services such
as education program development, certification and accreditation program management, continuing education program

management and administration, and
more, including the Automated Vehicular
Gate Systems Installer Certification
and Automated Gate Systems Designer
Certification programs.
"As with other industries, there is a low
barrier for entry into the door, fence and gate
industries," explains Thomas. "Credentials
from a legitimate, third-party, independent
organization that is recognized throughout
the industry is the best way to validate that
you are what you say you are, which gives the
customer confidence in selecting your firm
for their project."
And consumer demand requires that successful contractors know more than the technical basics of installing a fence, door or gate,
Thomas says, "There are so many competitive
forces coming from customers, competitors
and government at all levels, that keeping
up with the market and rules of the game is
a never-ending process. I think groups like
the AFA and IDA do a lot to help professional
contractors keep up with these influencers
and set our respective members apart from
those who see every job as a truck payment."
