Fencepost - July/August 2017 - 57

May 2017

fences need to be replaced. Business should be strong for the
next 18 or 24 months from a wood privacy standpoint.
Overall, business is up over 30%. The backlog is up
significantly. Leads, overall year to date, are up over 24%.
More of the PVC product is being sold in the Houston area
even though it's not a PVC market. Based on what happened
to fences nine years ago, homeowners may be looking for an
alternative to wood-something that will last longer or has
less maintenance. More import product is entering the market.
Price is a driving factor in part; however, it's believed that the
availability of Western Red Cedar is prompting consumers to
buy import product.
Chain link and iron are remaining consistent with previous years.

SOUTHEAST
Residential work is up 20% this year. Commercial is down
slightly. Because the Atlanta market grew very fast, many are
now in a cycle of replacing inferior-quality products that were
installed during the boom.
There has been an increase in specialty fence products like
composites and decorative metal. This is partly due to the price
increase of cedar but also because consumers seem to be more
savvy regarding a product's longevity.
Overall, Atlanta's going strong and southeast is doing really well.
Sales are 8% higher year to date, and the opportunities have
increased by 9% over the same time period. Labor force has
become more of a problem now that the market has created a
stronger demand. Installers are demanding larger wages, using
other opportunities as leverage. Starting to see competitors
make ludicrous offers to subcontractors for one-time deals
that hurt the work flow. Recent price increases do not seem
to have significantly impacted the ability to sell; businesses
to continue to put escalation on materials. Ornamental
aluminum and vinyl fence have seen the biggest increases in
this market. Galvanized chain link will soon be the leader
once the government contracts and solar farms release work.
