TEAMWORK: THE FORESTRY COMMUNITY DEVELOPS THE NEW AUSTIN CARY FOREST LEARNING CENTER By Scott Sager, UF/IFAS School of Forest Resources & Conservation A s of April 2014, the University of Florida's newest building will not be made of brick and steel, but from pine and cypress. Located 10 miles north of Gainesville on the Austin Cary Forest, the new Learning Center is the product of the combined vision of the forestry community; a group effort created a showplace to highlight the importance of forests and to educate the public on the sustainable use of forest products. The nearly 8,000-square-foot facility replaces a conference building that was lost to fire in July 2011. It has a much larger conference room, kitchen, 30-seat classroom and a library. The Center is complemented by a large deck overlooking Lake Mize. Several smaller buildings nearby provide space for breakout sessions and smaller meetings. Together with the Members of the Development and Construction Committee break ground for the Austin Cary Forest Learning Center in April 2013. Thanks to the tireless efforts of this group, more than $2-million in both cash and material donations were made and the Learning Center is now a reality. Center, these building compose the Austin Cary Forest Campus. While the Center will be a valuable asset in educating visitors on the value of Florida's forests, one of the proudest aspects of the process has been how it was built. In the true spirit of land-grant universities, this project was a partnership between the public and private sectors. On the private side, more than 200 alumni, faculty and staff, and SFRC Director Tim White, FFA Executive Front view of the new Austin Cary Vice President Alan Shelby and Development Learning Center. and Construction Committee Chair Jack Vogel celebrate the Center's grand opening in April 2014.
