Phil Gornicki Retires A pril 28, 2015, marked the end of an era. After 24 years with the Florida Forestry A ssociation, Phil Gornicki, FFA's Director of Regulatory Affairs, has retired. "Phil is leaving some incredibly large shoes to fill," said FFA Executive Vice President Alan Shelby. "He has been an integral part of our successes these many years. The office will not be the same without him." A proud graduate of Clemson University, Phil worked with the Florida Forest Service (then the Division of Forestry) for 14 years before joining the FFA staff in 1991. Originally, his responsibilities centered around local government, namely ensuring that the forest industry received fair treatment under the growth management comprehensive plans that counties were beginning to develop at the time. His efforts were successful. In 2000, Phil received FFA's Distinguished Service Award in appreciation, becoming the first - and, to this day, only - non-member to receive the award. After two years with the Association, his arena was expanded from local government to include regulatory issues on the state and federal levels as well. Key issues from his portfolio range from silviculture and wildlife best management practices to endangered species and water management district regulations. He has also worked extensively with the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, the American Tree Farm System and the Master Logger Program. Phil's plans for retirement? "I'd like to do some volunteer work," he said. "Maybe pursue some of my personal interests, like photography. Do more traveling. I'm not one to do extensive planning. I like to wait and see what comes." 733194_Allstar.indd 1 Florida Forests 16 Spring/Summer 2015 2/19/15 7:15 PM http://www.ffa.outdoorund.com
