Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue. Photo: Dan Scavino.

"Once the president is seated, he
has remarks... He starts reading, and
then he goes off script. Then the press
starts firing questions at him; none of
them have anything to do with ag, of
course," Lynetta recalled. "Finally, Sean
Spicer escorts the press out, and the
president has some opening remarks
with just us.
"He talks again about what happened with the dairy issue and his
response with the tariff on lumber,"
she continued, "and the secretary interrupts him and says, 'Mr. President, Ms.
Griner from Florida is with the timber
industry.'"
And that is when her time researching the issue earlier that day paid off,

as the president engaged her in discussion. "It's not every day that a
person has the chance to exchange
thoughts with the leader of the free
world. If you do, you want to know
what you're talking about!" Lynetta
said with a laugh.
"Later, he wanted to know what
kind of timber we cut. And I was also
able to tell him that the screen on his
cell phone is made from forest products," she said.
Their discussions were not limited
to forestry, however. She was able to
share her thoughts on beef as well.
"(President Trump) made us feel
so comfortable," she added. "He
really wanted to hear the stories.

I say that because, for example, everybody wants regulatory
reform, whatever business you're
in. He wanted to know the challenges we're facing with that issue.
He was very interested. We all left
there feeling very optimistic and
hopeful and wowed."
"It was the first time since the
Reagan administration that a group
of farmers has been called to the
White House," Karen offered.
After the president left, the group
continued to talk to Secretary Perdue.
Then they stood with him as he conducted his first press conference.
"You're there representing ag.
You're there for your industry. You're
not there for any other reason. It's
an honor to be asked," Lynetta said.
"One thing that kept coming up
throughout this experience was people saying how proud our mother and
daddy would be of her," Karen said.
"My thought on that is her life has
been a series of successes; she has
achieved so much. They were always
proud of her."
"It meant a lot to me that people
thought of them at this special time
in my life because I certainly did. And
I was so glad that Karen could share
it with me," Lynetta said. *

the National Economic Council,
