BAKER JOINS UF

AS SCHOOL OF FOREST RESOURCES
AND CONSERVATION DIRECTOR

By ELLISON LANGFORD
THIS SPRING, THE University of
Florida Institute for Food and Agricultural
Sciences welcomed a new director for
its School of Forest Resources and
Conservation (SFRC). Terrell T. "Red"
Baker joined the school April 1, 2017,
after serving as chair of the University
of Kentucky Forestry Department since
2010. He replaced Tim White, who has
retired.
A native of Florida, Baker earned a
doctoral degree in forest biology from
Auburn University, a master's of science in forest resources from Clemson
University and a bachelor's in economics
from the University of the South.
"It's fantastic," said Baker, who is
happy to be back serving his home
state. "For me, professionally, it's like
coming full circIe. I'm excited about the
opportunity to come back to my home
state and use the experience and skills
I've gained throughout my career to
help the SFRC continue to serve our
community."
Baker said his experience serving at
land-grant institutions has taught him to

appreciate the importance of their intrinsic duty to serve the people through
their teaching, research and Cooperative
Extension missions.
He said he has enjoyed the opportunities his career has afforded him to
develop relationships with landowners and other stakeholders and to use
his expertise to help enhance their
livelihoods.
"We are pleased to welcome Dr.
Baker, who has a rich background in
Extension, research and teaching," said
Jack Payne, UF senior vice president for
agriculture and natural resources. "Dr.
Baker brings a wealth of knowledge that
can only help UF's program in forestry,
fisheries and geomatics become even
stronger."
Baker worked for several years as
an Extension specialist in New Mexico,
conducting educational programs and
research in riparian, or "stream-side,"
environments. As riparian areas are so
rare in the desert, Baker said ensuring their well-being was a particularly
important Extension endeavor.

He plans to invest the same attention into Florida's natural resources and
the people who rely on them for a variety of pursuits.
"I recognize the importance of the forest industry in the state of Florida, not
just historically, but currently," Baker said.
"And it's important that we work to serve
that community through our research and
education enterprises."
He is confident in the abilities of SFRC
faculty and staff to carry out this mission.
With researchers and Extension personnel throughout the state, the school
is well-acquainted with the needs and
nuances of the state's natural landscape.
"The impressive diversity of expertise
and disciplinary breadth of our faculty, as
well as their research and education programs, make us uniquely poised to help
solve many of the most pressing natural
resource management problems we face
today," Baker said. *
