Suppression Challenges in the Panhandle Confirmed
Following Allanton Fire
By JOHNNY SABO, Field Operations Chief, Florida Forest Service
ON MARCH 30, 2019, the Florida Forest Service conducted
an initial attack on the 2297 Allanton Fire in the Sandy Creek
community just east of Panama City. The weather for the day
was a mild 73 degrees with 62% relative humidity and winds
from the southwest at 10 mph. On-scene supervisors assessed
the fire at two acres, initially requiring five medium Type II dozers and three heavy Type I dozers due to the heavy amount of
timber blown down by Hurricane Michael approximately five
and a half months earlier.
The fire was contained at 15 acres until a spot over (a fire
ignited by flying embers) was discovered at dark one-half mile
from the main fire. At the time, it was estimated at no larger
than five acres. Crews worked late into the night to reach the
five-acre spot over but were unsuccessful. The determination
was made to pull all firefighters out due to unsafe conditions,
including standing snags not being visible in the dark.
The following morning, crews were not able to contain
the spot in its original footprint due to the heavy blow-down
and boggy terrain. The predominate winds shifted out of the
north at around 10 a.m. CDT, and the fire made a major run
to the south. As the wind shifted, on-scene supervisors made
the decision to pull crews to the flanks and protect structures

Florida Forest Service dozers working on the fire line were impeded by
the heavy amount of timber blown down and boggy terrain.
