a modified plot data collection protocol has been proposed, one that entails
collecting both downed and standing
tree data. The process is expected to
take a few months to complete, which
will be less time-consuming than full
FIA plot data collection, yet dependent upon access and downed timber obstacles.
Certified FIA crews from other states
are needed to assist the Florida Forest
Service with completing the necessary

needs and provided approximate forest damage across the 11 Florida counties impacted by Michael.
As areas became more accessible,
our Forest Resource Assessment and
Recovery Team began conducting an
additional ground survey applying
a forest health protocol, also implemented by neighboring Georgia.
The 743 data points provided a more
composite map, detailing and further
quantifying the unprecedented timber damage sustained by Hurricane
Michael in Florida.
At this point in the recovery process, it is important for the Florida
Forest Service to gather additional,
post-storm FIA data to help inform forest resource managers as they make
decisions and plans in the impacted
areas and beyond. We are working
with the USDA Forest Service Southern
Research Station on this endeavor, and

data collection due to the large impact
area. Funding for this FIA data collection is included in the federal disaster relief package that was signed by
President Donald Trump in early June.
Once the data has been collected, the
Southern Research Station can conduct
analysis and provide a report for the
State of Florida. Obtaining this data is
one of many critical steps as we work
to recover the forests in the Florida
Panhandle. *
