PROJECT LEARNING TREE
BRINGS THE

FOREST TO
THE KIDS

PROJECT LEARNING TREE®
(PLT®) is an award-winning,
environmental education program designed for teachers
and other educators, parents,
and community leaders and
anyone working with youth
from preschool through grade
12. PLT provides educators
with high-quality, professional
development, hands-on activities, and a multi-disciplinary
curriculum that can be easily
integrated into lesson plans for

help teach youth about trees,
forests, and the environment. PLT is a program of the Sustainable
Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) and is sponsored in Florida by the
University of Florida, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences,
School of Forest Resources and Conservation.
FLORIDA PLT CONTINUES to Grow With New Coordinator
In November 2018, Jessica Ireland joined Florida Project
Learning Tree as the new coordinator, succeeding Nancy
Peterson, who retired after leading Florida Project Learning
Tree for 11 years. "Nancy has grown this program tremendously and it's now one of the top in the country. I will continue to build upon her legacy," Ireland said.
During the past four years, Ireland has served as the program coordinator for the Florida Natural Resources Leadership
Institute (NRLI). From 2011 to 2014, she was the project coordinator for PINEMAP (Pine Integrated Network: Education,
Mitigation, and Adaptation Project), a USDA National Institute
of Food and Agriculture Coordinated Agricultural Project.
Ireland earned her master's degree in forest resources and
conservation from the University of Florida in 2008 with a focus
on environmental education and communication.

Jessica is working closely with the PLT Steering Committee
to build a strategic plan for the future of the program. "Many
steering committee members have been volunteering with
Florida Project Learning Tree for years and years. They have a
unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities ahead
of the program," Ireland said. "I am working together with the
Steering Committee to grow the program through sponsorships, grants, marketing, and enhanced evaluation methods."
Land Stewards of the Year to Host PLT Educator Training
Ben and Louann Williams have owned and managed
Wetland Preserve, LLC since 2008. This 3,725-acre property
in Putnam County is composed of flatwoods, bottomland forest, floodplain swamp, and sandhill, and the Preserve is part
of the American Tree Farm System. The Williams have made
great strides in improving and conserving the forests and natural resources of the property, leading to their recognition as
the 2019 Florida Land Stewards of the Year.
Ben and Louann recognize the importance of educating
Florida's citizens about working forests. The Williams engage
with the public through presentations to local schools and other
groups, media interviews, and tours of their preserve in which
they share best management practices and conservation efforts.
The Williams are partnering with Florida Project Learning
Tree® (PLT®) to host a PLT professional development training at their preserve. Educators who attend will have the
first-hand experience of a family owned working forest and
receive training in PLT curriculum and teaching strategies to
enable them to share what they have learned with their students. The PLT training is scheduled for Sat., Sept. 28, 2019
at Wetland Preserve, LLC.
