The Florida Forest Stewardship
Program was formed in the early 1990's,
after an update to the U.S. Farm Bill put
the onus on landowners to be responsible stewards. The U.S. Forest Service,
working closely with state forestry agencies, cooperative extension, and conservation districts, was charged with
connecting landowners with the information and tools needed to manage
their forests and woodlands.
The program, coordinated by
University of Florida IFAS Extension and

housed in the School of Forest Resources
and Conservation, has clear objectives
to:
* Help and encourage multiple resource
management on private lands;
* Recognize landowners that are putting the multiple-use stewardship
ethic to work; and
* Encourage agencies and other
partners to work together to serve
landowners
However, organizations like Florida
Fish and Wildlife Conservation

Commission, USDA Natural Resources
Conservation Service, and U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service were all also offering
services to landowners, some related
to forestry, but others for broader agricultural and land management.
According to Dr. Michael Andreu,
associate professor in urban forestry
and the faculty supervisor of the
Forest Stewardship Program, this was
ultimately confusing for landowners
who weren't always receiving all the
resources they needed.
"In 2011, we started to rethink how
to best communicate and network
with landowners. We wanted to get
organized, so that people could get
connected to all available services no
matter where they started," Andreu
said.
Using the Florida Forest Stewardship
Program's operational framework, the
Florida Land Steward partnership and
communication strategy was built.
"It made sense to join forces to
streamline our outreach efforts and better leverage resources," Andreu said.
"We publish a common newsletter and
