confusion and causing emotions to
run high.
* In addition to the four Type 2 IMTs,
FFS also deployed Type 3 IMTs to
manage base camps in Homestead
and Lehigh Acres. These base camps,
which local reporters described as
"a small city" due to their extensive scope and size, were managed
through an interagency effort.
Chainsaw Strike Teams
FFS' crews of experienced sawyers
and leaders can take on many different types of missions and were a critical

component of Hurricane Irma recovery. At the statewide level, FFS initially deployed eight strike teams to
clear roadways of fallen trees, limbs
and vegetative debris, thus creating
access for emergency responders and
utility crews responsible for restoring
power. Later, FFS strike teams helped
restore infrastructures, clear debris
from public areas and help ensure
roadway access so citizens could safely
travel and return home.
In addition, FFS' 15 districts dispatched 20+ local strike teams around

the state as they deemed necessary.
Many residents contacted their district FFS office, for instance, when
fallen tree limbs blocked neighborhood roads and vegetative debris was
dangerously heavy in areas where children play.
Road Clearing with Heavy Equipment
Much like the chainsaw strike teams,
teams of personnel experienced in
using heavy equipment such as bulldozers were also deployed. These crews are
typically some of the first responders on
scene to begin post-hurricane recovery.
They are essential to clearing roadways
and ensuring all first responders, relief
workers and residents have a safe path
to travel - and a safe destination once
they arrive. After ensuring main thoroughfares and other frequently travelled
roads were safe, FFS heavy equipment
operators moved to our state forests
to clear trails and forest roads. Our district offices stayed connected to local
leaders and residents so FFS could continue to respond to requests as needed
throughout the recovery process.
ADDITIONAL MISSION-CRITICAL
STAFF ROUND OUT FFS'
RESPONSE
FFS also supported state emergency
operations centers when needed; for
instance, our aviation team provided
operational command support at the
state emergency operations center.
