WORKING FORESTS WEEK
'MAY THE FOREST BE WITH YOU'
OCTOBER 15-21, 2017

APPROXIMATELY 80 EVENTS were held across the state
throughout Working Forests Week, including school activities, presentations to civic clubs and the general public, workshops and
tours. Articles and opinion pieces appeared in daily and weekly
newspapers throughout the state. And social media posts highlighted working forests across a variety of platforms.
The theme, a take-off on the blockbuster "Star Wars" cinematic series, was chosen to tie in with the 40th anniversary of
the series' original release.
"I think people had a lot of fun with the "May the Forest Be
With You" theme," said Ann Duff, who chairs the Association's
Communications Committee and also chaired this year's Working
Forests Week Task Force. "Our main goal was to tell the forestry story, and we wanted to bring in a greater audience. The
"Star Wars" hook was a creative way to help make our story
resonate with people who might skim past something about
all the jobs that the industry provides, but who can't resist a
good cosmic pun."
Duff noted that the materials developed for Working Forests
Week could also be used for presentations and activities throughout the year. A complete toolbox is always available on the
Association website, www.FloridaForest.org; simply choose
"Working Forests Week" under the Programs tab.

As
par t
of
Working Forests
Week,
approximately 50 people
participated in the
Outstanding Tree
Farmer of the Year
Tour, held at John
and Allison Nash's
beautiful Osceola
Pines in Levy County.
Guests were able
to learn about sustainable forestry,
best management
plans, wildlife management, turpentining, honeybees,
alpacas and more.
"The (Working
Forests Week) task force hit another home run this year," said
Association Executive Vice President Alan Shelby. "Participation in
Working Forests Week continues to grow. Members of our Board of
Directors were key to its success, as were our partners at the Florida
Forest Service." *
