Northern-climate low-traffic treatments will be placed on Mille Lacs County Road 8 near Pease, Minn. quantify the full benefit of pavement preservation in a southern climate. APPLying northern treAtments: mnroAd At press time in mid-July, final planning was underway for placement in late summer of pavement preservation sections representing northern climate applications. MnROAD worked with state DOTs with a northern research focus to develop a consensus to utilize 2.1 miles on Mille Lacs County Road 8 as the low-traffic road, and 4 miles on U.S. 169 as the higher traffic road. Both sections are located near Pease, Minn., about 45 minutes north of the main MnROAD test site at Albertville, on I-94 just northwest of Minneapolis. Martin Marietta Aggregate's Waite Park granite will be the aggregate source, Flint Hills Resources will provide the asphalt emulsions, and Hardrives will provide the plant mix. Age and pretreatment condition of the existing pavement surfaces on C.R. 8 and U.S. 169 were the primary factors in the selection process for both locations. The original treatments/ combinations from Lee Road 159 will be placed in both locations in order to encompass the effects of thermal cracking and snow plow damage. Vance Brothers will be the placement contractor for the northern emulsion-based treatments, and East Alabama Paving will be the placement contractor for the ThinLay, just as it was for the southern portion of the experiment, which will eliminate the otherwise confounding effect of placement quality on performance. At press time, emulsion sections placements were completed by July 30, and placement of the ThinLay was scheduled to begin the week of August 15. All treatments and treatment combinations are expected to be in place well before the end of August. Weekly pavement condition data collection will begin immediately after the completion of construction in an identical manner to the southern sections, with all performance data saved in a common format to facilitate the development of uniquely regional life-extending and condition-improving benefit curves. The Fall 2016 sponsor meeting will be held at MnROAD, so funding partners can observe post-treatment condition of all the low- and high-volume road treatments/combinations. The partnership between NCAT and MnROAD to execute a national long-term pavement preservation benefit experiment will provide state, city and county road agencies with the tools they need to select pavement preservation treatments and combinations in a rational, proven manner based on the pretreatment condition data found within their existing pavement management systems. Post-treatment feedback from pavement management systems will facilitate the calibration of these curves for local aggregates, contractors and practices.
