Founded as a Canadian fresh produce
grower and shipper, Scotlynn has
expanded its operations to include
farms in Florida and Georgia. From
spring through late fall, it supplies
its products to customers in Canada,
the U.S. and Mexico via a fleet of
300 late-model trucks with 53-foot
refrigerated trailers. The company has
three warehouse locations: Vittoria,
Ontario; Belle Glade, Florida; and
Bainbridge, Georgia.
Scotlynn also offers its expertise to
other food shippers through a freight
brokerage and logistics business
headquartered in the U.S.
"I think our hybrid model of owning
equipment and also having the
ability to do freight brokerage with

independent carriers is becoming
more and more valuable," said Ryan
Carter, executive vice president of
Scotlynn's USA Division. "No matter
what happens, at the end of the day
we will get a shipment taken care of
whether it's with our own equipment
or a partner carrier. We can make
decisions on the fly and put equipment
into place without handing shipments
back to a customer. That's a pretty
strong advantage."
Scotlynn's logistics and freight
business employs 155 staff members
and 320 truck drivers. "We don't have
trouble retaining drivers," Carter said.
That's due not only to the competitive
pay the company offers, he said, but
also to the way it maintains its trucks.
Drivers also like the low ratio of drivers
to manager/dispatchers, which makes
their interactions more personalized.
Scotlynn has incorporated remote
temperature monitoring and
adjustment capabilities in its own
trucks. In addition, it has made
significant financial and time
investments into implementing the
McLeod TMS system in-house. The
software will enable Scotlynn to
manage the complex operations that
come with having trucks and brokerage
operations in the U.S. and Canada.
"I think that will be huge for us. It will
make our efficiency much better, make
it easier for us to do on-the-fly pricing
and navigation," Carter said. Truck
trailer utilization through the system
will be much more efficient as well. The
system will also be able to integrate
the e-logs that Scotlynn has in its

trucks and will be able to add other
technologies that may come along in
the future.
Carter does have concerns about how
the electronic log mandate will impact
the trucking industry and shipping
prices. He believes that at least 10
percent of independent drivers may
get out of the business because they
will no longer be able to make enough
money to balance the risks and lifestyle
sacrifices they make when driving.
"The second big regulatory issue is
the Food Safety Modernization Act.
It's a little tricky to figure out what
the interpretation of that means for
shippers, drivers, trucking companies
and brokers. It has already led to
increased costs to keep in compliance,
and that will raise the cost of doing
business for everybody," he added.
Scotlynn's logistics and freight
brokerage business has been growing
over 30 percent in sales each year. "We
have found a strong niche in the market;
we haul mostly perishable products,
which requires direct and honest
communications and people simply
doing what they say they're going to
do," Carter said.
"Between our incredible staff, our great
culture here and our focus on proactive
communication and honesty, I really see
us continuing our growth and providing
a very valuable service to clients. Our
commitment to them is that when we
tell them we're doing something we
always do it," he added. "In my eyes,
that's the right way of doing business,
and that's not going to change." ■
