students say they wish they had taken
the course earlier.
Varying Curriculums
Each school has its own philosophy
of what belongs in a supply chain
program. Penn State bases its
curriculum on the supply chain
operations references (SCOR) model:
plan, source, make, deliver and return.
"Students get more of a breadth of the
supply chain than an in-depth look,"
said Novack.
Ohio State stays true to its roots in
logistics and operations. "Programs
that have gone down the supply chain
path diminish their focus and course
content in logistics," said Goldsby.
"We refuse to do that. We have built
out our logistics program even further.

We are covering the basic movement
and storage aspects and going deeper
and broader into logistics as opposed
to the mile-wide, inch-deep treatment
of supply chain management."
Some universities are emphasizing
analytics. "Our programs are more
quantitative than a traditional supply
chain program," said John Mittenthal,
associate professor of operations
management at the University of
Alabama. "We are focused on model
building, on analysis of those models,
on trying to answer business questions
based on data-driven information."
"Our students take courses about
optimization, scheduling heuristics
and inventory management from a
quantitative standpoint. They take a

simulation course where they model real
systems on the computer and then do an
analysis. Those types of things are not
common to all supply chain programs,"
added Sharif Melouk, associate
professor of operations management.
Remaining Relevant
The universities encourage students
to get industry experience through
internships and/or coursework.
Michigan State's supply chain
undergraduates partner with their
counterparts in applied engineering
science to solve real-life problems for
companies. For the practicum class
at the University of Texas, companies
submit project proposals that students
bid to work on. "Companies compete
to have a project that's interesting and
that will attract students," said Gilbert.
