master's. They go back home with a
bachelor's degree and a master's degree
from a good American university," said
Dale Rogers, interim chair and professor
of supply chain management.
There's a lot of demand for different
forms of degrees, he added. "People
are impatient; they want an education
and they want it fast...I think you're
going to see more of this."
The University of Tennessee will be
offering a new M.S. in supply chain
management in conjunction with Tongji
University in Shanghai, China, and
Kühne Logistics University in Hamburg,
Germany. Students will spend one
semester on each campus.
MIT offers a 10-month residential
master's in supply chain management
on its Cambridge campus. Students
at centers in Spain, Malaysia,
Luxembourg, China and South America
can take identical programs (set up by
MIT), but earn the master's degree from
their own universities.

Each January, the students from
all of these programs converge on
MIT's campus and work in teams
with their peers from throughout
the world. "The global nature of the
supply chain makes it imperative that
they learn to work successfully with
people from all of these different
backgrounds," said Bruce Arntzen,
executive director, supply chain
management program.
MIT has also developed an online
MicroMasters Credential as an
alternative for students who
don't have the socioeconomic
background, the GMAT scores
or the undergraduate grades to
get accepted into its traditional
master's program.
"We created five tough online courses
that each run 12 weeks long," Arntzen
said. Students take exams at the end
of each course, and students who
successfully complete all five courses
can take a comprehensive final exam
to earn the MicroMasters credential.

The MicroMasters courses are free,
although anyone who wants to earn
the credential must pay fees for
verification. The total cost of the five
courses and the comprehensive final
exam is $1,350.
Students with the MicroMasters
credential can apply for MIT's blended
supply chain master's program.
Those who get into the highly
competitive program will earn the
same master's degree as the 10-month
residential students.
To alleviate the talent gap, many
schools offer certificate programs to
help companies prepare their highperforming employees for supply chain
positions. "If you have an engineer or
a finance person who has no education
in supply chain, our online certificate
programs can be a quick way to get
them acclimated to the principles
behind it so they can perform in those
roles," said Judy Jacobs, director of
corporate and student relations at
Michigan State.
