Food Shippers of America - Spring/Summer 2017 - 27

The mere possibility of going through
the canal and taking a shipment to
another port may indeed provide
food for thought to parties at such
an impasse, although Cook notes
that stakeholders, including carriers,
retailers and shippers, still have to
do the math to figure out which port
works best.
Even so, he predicts, top U.S. retailers
will fight hard to keep a strike from
paralyzing them in the future. "They
will bypass it," Cook says.

costs. In addition, there may be a
sudden unexpected shortage of
equipment in a lane that has been
available for decades."
Even so, he points out, the change also
offers a new opportunity.
"Those 40-foot boxes always have
been available to go west," Wilkes
says. "When they come in on East
Coast ports such as Savannah or
Charleston, they still have to get back

to those port cities. When they do, that
creates the opportunity to load them.
Even though it may take away the
opportunity to go west, it creates the
opportunity to go east."
Coastal Parity?
Major U.S. ports - not to mention
passages and ports all over the world
- are responding to the bigger, better
Panama Canal. Ports along the U.S.
Atlantic and Gulf coasts have expanded
or are in the process of doing so.

Wilkes said that disrupting the West
Coast's dominance also may shake
up arrangements on which food
shippers have sought to capitalize.
He points out that the 40-, 20- and
45-foot containers that bring goods
inland from the West Coast to every
U.S. city have offered cost-savings
opportunities that many food shippers
took advantage of.
"For example, a 40-foot container
that is shipped to Tennessee has to
be repositioned to the West Coast,"
he says. "That empty container is a
perfect way to transport commodities
such as canned goods back across the
country. It's more economical to ship
heavy and dense goods on a 40-foot
container vs. a 53-foot container
because of minimal dunnage for
bracing, so you're not paying for space
that you're not using. The container
line also benefits by not having to
reposition an empty container, and
they often pass those savings on to
the shipper."
By reversing the supply chain, a
greater proportion of imports coming
through the East Coast or the Gulf
of Mexico slashes the number of
containers going west, he observes.
"Suddenly, that 40-foot box is not
available to go to the West Coast,
which disrupts a source of empties
and potentially drives up pricing due
to supply and demand," Wilkes says.
"Having to use a 53-foot-container
instead of a 40-foot container adds
