Strong Wage Growth
The ATA also seeks to highlight the
importance of the industry to the
national economy. According to its
report, 68.9 percent of all freight
tonnage is moved on the nation's
highways, meaning that the trucking
industry transports just about every
product the public purchases. Industry
groups also point out that in an era
of stagnant wages, truck drivers are
faring especially well. The average
pay for long-haul truckers surged
from 2013 to 2015 to reach a record
$57,000, according to the National
Transportation Institute. Carriers are
hoping that the substantial increase in
pay helps to keep their best drivers on
the road for years to come.
"We talk about a driver shortage,
but we also have to look at driver
retention," said Mike Cervin, CFI's vice
president of Mexico operations. "Once
we find a driver, how do we retain that
driver? Our industry is well known for
turnover, and carriers and shippers can
both help to retain those drivers."

"The industry is very much at the mercy of
the driver shortage and is trying to recruit
drivers. We have some tractors that are
available now, we just need the drivers to be
in the seat."
Kaitlin Owens, senior communications coordinator for
the Joplin, Mo.-based trucking company CFI
Despite the industry's outreach
efforts, the demanding nature of the
job remains a major reason for the
driver shortage.

The biggest turnover that we have is
definitely within the first six months.
People get in and then realize that it's
not for them."

"It's a really tough gig," Owens said.
"Our drivers are in their trucks and
are away from home usually at least
three weeks at a time, so they live
out of their tractor. It's a very difficult
lifestyle with a lot of sacrifice. It's
fantastic for those who have that thirst
for adventure and want to see the open
road and experience all 48 contiguous
states, but it is a tough lifestyle.

Owens said that only about three
out of every 100 applicants will be
hired by CFI as a truck driver. Some
applicants don't have the skill to
maneuver large trucks, and others are
eliminated by the company's stringent
drug-screening procedures, which
include urine and hair-follicle analysis.
The jobs are there, but suitable
candidates can be hard to find.
