2017

A big part of this shift is fueled by
demographics. Yes, e-commerce
is popular with all segments of the
population, but the largest threat looms
from millennials, who are now in their
20s and 30 and make up the largest
segment of shoppers. These folks have
grown up in the Internet age and feel
completely comfortable shopping for
everything and anything on line.
We're already seeing the impact of their
habits on countless other retail sectors,
just as we see many large companies in
the food industry - both retailers and
suppliers - experimenting with different
forms of e-commerce.
Second, we examine the key responses
the food industry must mount to ensure
relevance with tomorrow's customers.
One industry analyst summarized
this recently in The New York Times,
saying, "Given the convenience of
e-commerce, the consumer needs a
really good reason to go to a store and
park their car."

The level of shopper
engagement must rise
substantially above
current levels to create
ever greater customer
connections that
compel shoppers to
visit stores rather than
simply point and click.
In this section we examine some of the
critical choices retailers (and suppliers
to some extent) need to make to ensure
those customer connections. This
includes the necessary discussion
of how to deliver e-commerce either
through home delivery or store-based
pick up or "click and collect."
