Here again, recent news helps make
the point, as Amazon is reportedly
looking at a convenience store model
to have both a small store experience
and easy locations for customer
collection of orders.
But e-commerce isn't the only weapon
retailers can use to fight back.
Increasingly we see attention placed on
experiential stores and merchandising
that engage and delight the consumer
in bold new ways. Such efforts could
range from food-based events like
cooking demonstrations and classes
to stepped-up merchandising events of
all types of products.

The reality is that the food industry is far
from alone in this challenge. Consider the
shrinking relevance of daily newspapers
or the loss of market share of other
retailers, such as book and sporting
goods stores. Think about the forces that
have caused a company as powerful as
Nike to abandon the sport of golf.
And also think about how movie theaters
have managed to stay relevant by

substantially above current levels
to create ever greater customer
connections that compel shoppers to
visit stores rather than simply point
and click.

as consumers have countless new ways
to view movies.
Retaining relevance is clearly possible,
but it won't happen without a lot of
effort and creativity. ■

tool in the report can hopefully help
teams inside your company both
recognize the challenges at hand and
kick-start discussions about how to
address those challenges.
The diagnostic, in particular, can be
used in creative ways. For instance,
you might want to have diverse
teams discuss the issues, combining
people with different skill sets, from
different departments or especially
from different demographic groups.
No doubt a millennial employee might
see the world very differently than a
55-year-old executive. You need both
