most advantaged, cost-effective flows
to ultimate disposition.

Returns: Both Distraction
and Detraction
Assuming forward-supply capabilities
can be used in reverse logistics is
a mistake. The two can compete
in costly ways. One significant
consideration in returns processing
is how and where to conduct returns
sorting. Staging and processing areas
must be strategically located for the

Returned product, already low-value in
the return cycle and losing value daily,
occupies the same space and requires
the same resources as full-value,
forward-bound products. The value
of the goods continues to diminish
as time passes along the product's
optimal path to disposition. This
attempt to extract the highest value
from the returned goods can impede

Robust decision support technologies
are rapidly becoming mainstays for
profitably managing reverse logistics.
Companies embracing advanced
analytics will transform potential
margin-eroding return practices
into bottom-line improvements
while improving their competitive
positioning. Decision support
solutions will help streamline
returns processing by determining
the highest-value disposition.
Improvement areas include:
* Prioritizing and routing products
back to retail in order to capture
value despite the product's
reduced life cycle
* Forwarding reduced-value goods
into secondary markets or creating
liquidation events
* Donating unused goods to
food banks
* Forwarding products to
destruction facilities.

the operation's ability for processing
forward-bound, full-value products.
Maximizing the value of returns
without compromising core product
movement requires the right mix of
dedicated movement, documentation,
processing and costing required for
reverse product logistics.

Opportunity for 3PL Providers
Some manufacturers will opt to
manage reverse logistics in-house;
however, most will not assume all
facets of the returns process. On
the forward side, selling D2C online
requires a relationship with a large
mega-shipper like FedEx, UPS or
USPS. On the reverse side, regional
shippers and haulers have a chance
to generate a new revenue stream by
operating regional return centers that
manage returned-product movement
from the regional centers to the
various product dispositions.
End Game: Speed and Collaboration
The evolution of the digital
marketplace does not follow a
linear path. Therefore, the most
successful companies will be those
