A Quick Look
Founded: In 1979 by Abel Friedman as
Chicago Sweeteners. The company
later consolidated several related
businesses under the name of
Batory Foods.
Corporate headquarters:
Des Plaines, Illinois
Products: Conventional as well as
Non-GMO and organic ingredients:
dairy-based ingredients, fibers, fruit
and vegetable products, oils and
shortenings, proteins, starches and
grains, sweet ingredients (sugar,
molasses, tapioca syrup) and more
Customers: Food, beverage and
nutraceutical manufacturers: bakery,
beverage, confection, sauces,
dairy, meat processors, nutritional
supplements, etc.
Areas served: 50 states and Mexico
Logistics operation: 11 in-house
employees, including drivers in
a private fleet that serves the
Chicagoland area
Major changes in Batory Foods'
logistics operations over the last
two years have paid off in increased
operational efficiencies and opened
the doors to new opportunities,
according to Jennifer Kobus, director of
logistics and 3PL operations.
"In July 2015 we implemented our first
transportation management system
from Lean Logistics," she said. After
running the TMS in-house for about
a year, Batory made the decision
to utilize Lean Logistics' managed
service arm. That changeover occurred
last November.

"We have really gained efficiencies
from the TMS and we hope to gain more
from the managed services," Kobus
said. "TMS has a lot to offer and we
felt that since Lean Logistics knows
their system inside out they would be
able to increase our ability to service
our network," she said. The most
difficult task is to transfer the wealth
of knowledge that Batory has about its
customers to the new Lean Logistics
team, she added.
Batory has also automated its
appointment scheduling process
through the Lean Logistics TMS.
That's beneficial both to carriers
and to Batory, which now has a
dashboard of what is coming in and out
of its facilities.
"Being able to organize it that way
allows our facilities to flex up or flex
down in labor, based on items coming
into the location," said Kobus.
Batory Foods serves its customers
through a large network of warehouses
that include eight company-owned
facilities and another 20-plus 3PLs.
The company recently completed
construction of its largest facility
- close to 700,000 square feet - in
Wilmington, Ill. This large space has
enabled Batory to launch a new line
of business, providing third party
logistics services to key suppliers.
Their first customer in this endeavor
is Fonterra, a leading multinational
dairy company.
"They were looking for storage and
handling services at the same time we
were looking to open a facility like this
in that particular area. The synergies
worked very well," said Kobus.

The Wilmington facility features stateof-the-art technology including a yard
management system and automated
gate systems with kiosks to
decrease carrier cycle time, increase
throughput and provide up-to-the
minute accuracy in inventory
availability. Custom-built food grade
dock packages allow trailer seals to
be both sealed and unsealed inside
the facility, bolstering environmental
controls and providing increased
food safety.
"We are excited about providing the
3PL services to Fonterra," said Kobus.
With many years of experience in food
service, Batory is well-positioned
to help customers in meeting the
requirements of the Food Safety
Modernization Act.
Batory will also continue to look
at other technology that enables
it to expand upon its tracking
capabilities. While tracking a
shipment offers no guarantees that it
will get there as expected - there are
always unexpected issues - better
tracking will allow the company
to be more proactive in keeping
customers informed.
"The last year and a half has gotten us
much closer to the end game of being
able to meet our customers' future
needs," Kobus said.
Batory Foods continues to grow
through acquisitions, she added.
"That means our logistics team
always has to be on top of our game,
to be able to adapt to any new
acquisitions that come our way with
the mindset of always being able to
serve our customers." ■
