The group of Minnesota dairy farmers
that started the Bongards Creameries
cooperative more than a century ago
would likely be amazed at the way the
company has grown. Although it is still
headquartered in the Minnesota city
that provided its name, Bongards today
sends its products out to markets in
all 50 states as well as 43 countries
around the world.
Bongards is also a "clean label"
innovator, producing many of its
products with natural ingredients and
no artificial ingredients or chemicals.
With its vertically integrated supply
chain, it has the ability to control
the integrity of the milk supply that
goes into its cheeses. The company
manufactures its products at three
state-of-the-art plants in Bongards
and Perham, Minn., and in Humboldt,

Tenn. A new plant currently under
construction in Tennessee should be
open in another six months.
Bongards has warehouses at each
of its three plant locations and also
uses forward warehousing in Atlanta,
Georgia, and in Allentown, Pa. It will
be expanding the use of technology to
make these operations more efficient.
"We are currently moving toward
automated guided vehicles in our
warehouses," said Scott Tomes, senior
vice president sales and marketing at
Bongards Creameries.
The company tenders all of its
loads, both inbound and outbound,
via its Next Generation TMS from
Freightmaster. Its widespread markets
pose a logistical challenge, Tomes
said. "How do we get to all 50 states
and 40-plus countries in the most
effective manner, whether that's
backhaul or LTL?"
One advantage that the company
has is its years of experience. "When
you've been doing this 108 years, you
acquire a lot of knowledge. I think our
strength in logistics comes from our
expertise and our knowledge of the
market," he added.
Bongards has built long-term
relationships with consistent, reliable
carriers who can meet the company's
service metrics.
"We try to use 80 percent of our
loads on asset carriers and about
20 percent on 3PLs," said Mark Sellner,
director of logistics. "We are starting

to move toward carriers that have
satellite temperature control on their
trailers; that's something new that we
are embracing."
Sellner said one of his biggest
concerns is how the driver
shortage could eventually impact
shipping operations.
"We have aging drivers and I'm
hearing from the carriers that the
hours of service and the electronic
log requirements are probably going
to put some very small carriers out of
business once they have to comply. It's
either that or sign with larger carriers
as an owner/operator," he added.
"I think the driver shortage is
real, even though it hasn't hit us
100 percent yet. We are seeing
pretty good capacity on our side
of the business, probably because
refrigerated freight tends to pay a
little better even with the additional
costs of the assets. Our business is
a little more profitable for trucking
companies than some of the dry
loads," Sellner said.
Meanwhile, the company will continue
to look for ways that its transportation
can become more efficient. Tomes said
he sees possibilities in the Uber model
for long-haul carriers.
"If you have independent truckers
who subscribe to an Uber platform,
you can look at it as a way to reduce
your logistics costs," he added.
"While we don't have that model yet,
that type of technology will change
the industry." ■
