Operation Blessing is a global nonprofit
humanitarian organization that provides
many types of assistance, including
disaster and hunger relief, medical care,
safe water and community development
both internationally and in the U.S.
Operation Blessing's U.S. Hunger Strike
Force has been an important part of its
efforts since it was created in 1992.
"We're the donated-food shippers. Our
goal is to have a truly national impact
on hunger relief," said Kenny Burchard,
senior corporate account manager.
"For the most part, what we are doing
is resourcing a national network
of community-based hunger relief
charities that need food."
The organization procures truckload
quantities of unwanted food items
from growers, packing houses,
manufacturers, 3PLs, trucking
companies and other food shippers
and transports them to one of their four
distribution centers in Chesapeake,
Va., Bristol, Va., Ocala, Fla., and Grand
Prairie, Texas. From there, employees
palletize the loads and then ship
them out to Operation Blessing's

primary network of approximately 100
organizations that are equipped to
handle truckload shipments of food.
These primary coalition partners,
in turn, supply a secondary hunger
relief network of up to 5,000 food
banks, soup kitchens and similar
local agencies.
Companies donate dated product,
items with outdated labels or recipes,
mislabeled items (an ingredient
left out, for example), unlabeled
items (where the food is still good),
refused shipments and produce or
fresh items that are still edible but
may not be as attractive as the food
company prefers.
"We don't want them to throw the
product away; if it can be eaten,
we want it eaten," Burchard said.
When they donate food to Operation
Blessing, companies don't use valuable
warehouse space for dated inventory
and they don't incur the expense of
transporting the food to a landfill
and dumping it. We are solving the
inventory issue for them," he added.
To ensure that it can provide a timely
response, Operation Blessing has
several pickup options. Its own fleet
of tractors and trailers do much of
the pickup and delivery work in the
central and southeastern part of the
U.S. The organization also contracts
with different common carriers who
help out as needed. Sometimes a local
agency with its own tractor trailers
and/or trucks will pick up the food
items (anywhere from a truckload to a
few pallets) and distribute it directly
among their secondary organizations.

Operation Blessing has refrigerated
trailers as well as the necessary
equipment to ensure that perishable
products are transported at
optimum temperatures.
Burchard said that Operation
Blessing offers the donating
companies both quality assurance
and product accountability. "We
track all of the product that's
donated to us, inbound and
outbound and then out into the
community, and we ask all of the
charities that work with us to report
on the disposition and distribution of
any donated product," he explained.
"We demand that any charity that
works with us donate 100 percent of
the product that we give them. They
are not allowed to sell it or to barter
it for goods or services.
"One of the things we are trying
hard to do in our relationships with
food shippers is increase their
assurance that if you have a good
charitable service provider with
a high level of accountability you
can donate product with a lot of
confidence," he added.
The Hunger Strike team has just
started reaching out to 3PLs and
hopes that it can persuade more of
them to participate in its program
in the year ahead. "We are a good
option for them," said Burchard. "The
3PLs we work with now see us as a
part of their operations that deals
with aged, dated and unsaleable
food. We're hoping this year we can
expand that so they don't have to
throw away so much food." ■
