THE 63RD ANNUAL FOOD Shippers of America conference,
Evolution of Logistics: Developing our Leaders of Tomorrow,
was a huge success. This year's co-chairs, Cori Purrington, C&S
Wholesale/ES3, and Chris Wilkes, Yusen Logistics, put together
an outstanding conference that included motivational speakers
Robyn Benincasa and Vernice "Fly Girl" Armour, industry experts
Bob Costello and Michael Sansolo, and panels that discussed
intermodal, FSMA, home delivery, technology and leadership. All
presentations are available on the website, http://www.foodshippersofamerica.org/.
We had another record-breaking year! There were 1,148 attendees, 24 new member
companies joined and shipper/receivers attendees are up 3 percent from last year,
providing a great mix between shippers/receivers, carriers and 3PLs.
FSA had 21 applications for the John J Murphy Scholarship and awarded scholarships
to six of those applicants, totaling $22,500. Megan Sinik was our first-place winner and
was awarded $7,500; Megan is currently a student at the University of Tulsa. Her major
is biochemistry with pre-med concentration; her minor is Spanish. Congratulations,
Megan, and good luck.
FSA is a proud supporter of nonprofit food-related organizations. This year, Food
Shippers gave back by donating $10,000 to ALAN in October 2017 to help over 13
million people who were impacted when hurricane Harvey made landfall. During the
conference this year, I was honored to present ALAN with another $10,000. In addition,
FSA donated $5,000 to Feed America and $5,000 to St. Mary of Phoenix Food Bank.
There are so many people to thank for this great conference; it all starts with our
sponsors. All the breaks, meals, networking events and evening entertainment are
because of your continued support and incredible generosity.
Food Shippers of America is a volunteer organization, and the entire conference
was put together by the co-chairs, Chris Wilkes and Cori Purrington, their planning
committee and panelists, all volunteers who spent endless hours putting together
this year's conference. They did an excellent job utilizing their resources and bringing
current industry events to the conference. Thank you to Chris and Cori for a great
conference. And thank you to all the dedicated volunteers who took time from their
busy schedules to assist; we could not do this without you.
I would like to welcome to the board Mike Marquert, Birchwood Meats; Jennifer
Phillips, Riviana Foods; and Patrick McDonald, Darigold, and our advisors Russ
Gottemoeller, Continental Express, and John Murray, Florida East Coast Railroad. Their
terms began immediately after the 2018 conference and will end following the 2020
conference. We are happy to have them join our team.
Next year's co-chairs, Earnie Seibert, Sanderson Farms, and Mary Kearney,
Hirschbach, are already busy planning for the 2019 conference, which will be held at
the beautiful JW Marriott in Palm Desert, California.
Please remember, registration for the 2019 conference opens in July 2018. Listed on
the website under "Conference Registration" are registration instructions. Please read
them thoroughly to ensure your reservation at the conference.
Look forward to seeing you in Palm Desert!
