There is also the issue of time. It
doesn't take long to refuel a truck and
get back on the road, but most electric
trucks likely will take a bit longer to
recharge, making it important for
trucking companies to calculate how
much battery power they will need
for each trip and to plan a recharging
schedule that minimizes downtime.

will hold up to the rigors of daily use
over the long term, so many trucking
companies will wait to see how they
perform before purchasing them,
Kedzie said. When they need repair
and regular maintenance, will the
downtime be similar to diesel trucks,
and will technicians need extensive
training to make repairs?

Kedzie said one often-overlooked
challenge facing drivers is inadequate
parking at rest stops, and electric
trucks could complicate the matter. For
example, if there are 100 parking spots
at a rest stop and 10 are equipped with
charging stations, will those spots be
akin to handicapped parking spaces-
unavailable to diesel trucks even when
there are only one or two electric trucks
using them? Or will diesel trucks be
allowed to use them, potentially leaving
an electric truck with nowhere to
recharge?

If electric-truck repairs prove to be
especially complex, the competition
among trucking companies for
qualified technicians could intensify,
and the industry could even see a labor
shortage that drives up technicians'
wages significantly, Kedzie said.
Perhaps even more costly, some
trucking companies that perform
in-house maintenance might be
forced to outsource maintenance to a
dealer network.

* Durability and maintenance - At
this early juncture, no one can say
with certainty that electric trucks

* Driver acceptance - The ongoing
driver shortage makes it important
that the industry do whatever is
reasonable to retain experienced
drivers, and if operating electric

trucks raises any issues for drivers,
trucking companies will be reluctant
to incorporate them into their fleets.
"We want to make sure that if there
is new technology out there, the
drivers are accepting of it," Kedzie
said. "You don't want to lose a driver
because they don't like the types of
truck you're purchasing."
* The Highway Trust Fund - It's a
well-known fact that the nation's
infrastructure is in tatters, and the
existing funding to repair America's
roads and bridges is inadequate. If
electric trucks are widely adopted,
those vehicles no longer will be
adding to the Highway Trust Fund
through the federal fuel tax of 24.4
cents per gallon of diesel, yet those
trucks still will be causing wear and
tear to roadways. If a solution isn't
found, the country's infrastructure
could deteriorate even further.
* Verifying the environmental benefit
- Since electric trucks need to be
plugged in and most of the U.S.
