can make up the whole fleet and
can do so in a way that is ultimately
cheaper and more sustainable than the
current model."
The Swedish tech startup Einride is
taking it one giant step further with
its T-pod electric truck, which drives
autonomously and does not even have
a driver's seat. The company said its
trucks will be able to handle about
40,000 pounds and drive about 125
miles on a single charge. Einride plans
to have 200 vehicles, which cost about
$150,000 apiece, on the road by 2020.
Einride will be testing the trucks'
autonomous driving capabilities on
the roads of Halmstad on Sweden's
west coast in the third quarter of 2018.
The trucks will be carrying products
for the grocery giant Lidl, which aims
to reduce its carbon footprint by 40
percent by 2035.
In January, Renault Trucks announced
that it plans to launch a "a range"
of electric trucks in 2019, and Volvo

Trucks said it will begin selling electric
medium-duty delivery trucks in Europe
next year, with electric models for the
North American market to follow. Last
August, Cummins unveiled the Aeos,
a demonstration Class 7 truck with a
100-mile range, and in January, the
company acquired Johnson Matthey
Battery Systems, which specializes in
high-voltage automotive-grade battery
systems for electric and hybrid vehicles.
Navistar International Corp. and
Volkswagen are working to launch
electric medium-duty trucks by the end
of 2019, and Daimler began delivery to
customers in New York City last year of
its Fuso eCanter, an electric light-duty
truck produced under the Mitsubishi
Fuso brand name that has a range of up
to 80 miles.
One application that seems tailor
made for electric trucks is handling
containers at terminals, and Orange
EV's T-Series truck is looking to fill that
niche. At the end of 2017, the company
said its trucks had reached a milestone

of more than 100,000 key-on hours
since the company's first customer
took delivery in October 2015.
Orange EV said 75 percent of its
customers had become repeat
customers within six months of
receiving their first truck, with DHL,
Rail Management Services and the
Anderson DuBose Co., part of the
McDonald's distribution network,
being among its customers. The Class
8 trucks have a capacity of 81,000
pounds and a maximum speed of
25 mph, and the company said they
reduce energy costs by 90 percent
when compared with diesel trucks.
The company's research shows that
its trucks can run on a single charge
for anywhere from 11.4 hours when
operated mostly at top speeds to
32.7 hours when operated mostly at
low speeds and with long idle times.
"In as little as two years, we don't think
companies will be buying diesel terminal
trucks," said Mike Saxton, Orange EV's
chief commercial officer. ■
