Sana Raheem:

Taking Risks for Growth

"L
By Mary Lou Jay

ife is all about what you make of it.
I'm a true believer in going for it, in
just saying yes," said Sana Raheem,
head of operations at The Farmer's

Dog. She's benefited tremendously from that philosophy,
gaining a wide range of experience while taking on many
challenging roles during her career in food logistics.
Raheem recognized her strengths from
an early age. "I was always the person
running the show; I loved seeing
something come to fruition and leading
a team," she said. She decided to
major in supply chain management at
Michigan State University because the
program aligned with her interests and
offered many potential opportunities.
"I thought about how important a supply
chain is to a business," she explained.

"If you have a tangible good, supply
chain is basically the key differentiating
factor for how you can be the most cost
efficient and how you can really impact
the consumer for the better."
Raheem's first job was logistics
supervisor at a Kraft Foods distribution
center in Illinois. She was just 21 years
old, leading a team of much older
employees who had worked 20 years or
more in the industry.

"It was one of the best experiences
I've ever had," Raheem said. "I
learned so much about how you
actually run a distribution center,
about how much value and knowledge
that people who have been in the
business have." She relied on their
experience to help her improve work
processes. "I felt the dynamic and
the great morale you could create by
trusting in the people you work with. It
was such a great opportunity for me;
it gave me an understanding of what
supply chain is."
Raheem became the lead site logistics
planner for Kraft in the greater
Chicago area and then site logistics
team lead for Mondele¯ z International
when Kraft split into two companies.
On the move
She then moved to Wilkes Barre,
Pennsylvania, something of a culture
shock for a twenty-something more
accustomed to urban and suburban
living. "There was one Walmart and
one Starbucks in a 40-mile radius,"
she recalled.
But the opportunity was too good to
pass up. Mondele¯ z was transitioning
to a brand-new company, and
throughout her time there, Raheem
was able to build a strong foundation
for a 15-person replenishment team,
and eventually lead all of the U.S
transportation execution. During this
period, she developed contacts at
many different carriers and became
involved with the Food Shippers of
America.
