Developing an

Unbeatable

Inbound Freight
Management Strategy
By Dan Clark
By combining technology with a comprehensive shipment consolidation plan, food shippers can extract real savings and
efficiencies from their inbound freight management strategies.

M

anaging inbound freight operations is an ongoing challenge for food
manufacturers and distributors, both of which are impacted by the
inefficiencies, low levels of visibility and lack of standardization
associated with the usual inbound freight strategies. These problems

are exacerbated when companies lack comprehensive strategies for eking the lowest possible
shipping and unloading costs out of the process-a target which requires a comprehensive
shipment consolidation plan that's supported by technology.
No More "Guessing" About
Freight Arrivals
Moving freight should be a
straightforward process. When the
goods get picked up and delivered
on time, the customer is happy and
the shipper is home free. Although
companies control their own destinies
on the outbound side of the equation,
that level of control dwindles when it
comes to inbound freight. In the end,
the receiving company is generally
left to guess at when its freight
will arrive, which dock is the right
arrival location, what condition it will
be in, and whether there were any
opportunities to optimize this end-toend process.

Despite the potential benefits that
optimizing the inbound presents,
inbound freight management is
usually either ignored or pushed to the
bottom of the supply chain agenda as
companies focus on getting orders out
the door quickly. Those that choose
to ignore it are not only losing out on
high levels of shipment visibility, but
they're also missing key cost savings
and opportunities to improve customer
service levels-both are strategically
imperative based on the tight margins
in the food and grocery industry.
Done right, inbound freight
management also helps to enhance
both supplier and carrier relationships;

creates opportunities to consolidate
freight; and allows firms to leverage
routing guides that, in turn, lead to
improved dock efficiency. Done wrong,
inefficiencies will wreak havoc at the
distribution center, driving up cost of
goods and slowing down outbound
store delivery schedules.
Wanted: A More Dynamic
Inbound Environment
By using a comprehensive inbound
freight plan based on a collaborative
ecosystem of shippers, suppliers and
carriers, companies can effectively
establish a dynamic rating and
unloading allowance program. Add
accountability procedures that
