of mandatory carriers that will be used
for all VDS and CPU shipments. This will
enable LTL pricing improvements, superior
service levels and maximize opportunities
for LTL consolidation.
These accountability levels should
also extend to your own supply chain/
logistics department and procurement
group, both of which play a role in
ensuring that products get quickly
from origin to your DC. The sourcing
and purchasing departments manage
the relationships with the company's

suppliers and are involved with
selecting suppliers and managing the
price negotiation. This makes them an
important part of the inbound freight
equation, whether they know it (and
accept it) or not.
It is important to get both of these
groups to understand that the behavior
of their suppliers can negatively
influence the DC's efficiency. For
example, the sourcing group must put
its stamp of approval that a certain
behavior should be part of its supplier

evaluation process. From there, it's all
about supporting compliance programs
that improve that behavior, increasing
logistics efficiencies and lowering the
actual cost of goods.
For example, on any given day there may
be LTL capacity available and ready to
get your inbound freight on the road and
moving in your direction. But the next day,
your supplier may have a truck of its own
available for delivery, thus saving you
significant freight costs. By empowering
your suppliers to make these decisions
and your procurement group to negotiate
these situations-all based on your
established standards-you can create an
unbeatable inbound freight program.
Meeting Customer Needs
Let's face it, all shippers right now
are focused on getting the freight on
time in order to be able to turn around
and service their own customers.
Straightforward enough in theory, this
goal can quickly turn into a monumental
undertaking when suppliers aren't
onboard with it. By involving the right
departments (i.e., procurement and
logistics), developing an accountability
program, utilizing routing guides and
using an automated technology platform
to automate the entire process, food
shippers can create dynamic programs
that optimize inbound in a very costconscious manner.
As you assess your current inbound
strategies and work to improve upon
them, it's important to remember that
the quality and reliability of the data is
what ultimately drives performance.
Having the data in hand leads to more
strategic conversations (i.e., "Hey, here
are the three inbound pain points that
we're dealing with right now.") with
suppliers. Letting them know that they'll
be sharing in the cost of these pains-or,
they'll be figuring out a strategy to help
rectify the problem-is a great first step
on the path to more efficient inbound
freight management. ■
