Robin Benincasa
For the audience, she laid out an
eight-step approach she called
"The Essential Elements of Extreme
Performance," including such elements
as effectively managing adversity and
having total commitment to the goal at
hand. As she said, "Commitment starts
when the fun stops." Other elements
included urging teams to have the
mindset that "all problems are ours"
and not competing against one's own
teammates. In terms of choosing who
to be part of your team, she advised
leaders to "hire the inspired and
inspire the hired."

At the start of the session, Durm
presented statistics illustrating the
prevalence of foodborne incidents,
which result in one-sixth of Americans
getting sick each year. Nearly 130,000
people are hospitalized annually from
foodborne incidents, and 3,000 people
die. The Food Safety Modernization
Act, signed into law by President
Obama at the beginning of 2011, was
intended to reduce those statistics.
Durm noted, "The law moves FDA
from a regulatory agency to a new
law enforcement authority designed
to achieve higher rates of compliance
with prevention and risk-based food
safety standards."
The panelists touched on all aspects
of the law and its mandates, from
pre-cool requirements, to sanitary
conditions and cleaning, to recordkeeping and retention to training
requirements. Blitch noted that
penalties for violations of FSMA can be
severe and emphasized that "the key is
communication."

In his summation, Durm mentioned
Global Cold Chain Alliance's Refrigerated
Transport Best Practice Guide, which can
be accessed at https://www.gcca.org/
resources/transportation-guide.
In the third session of the day, "What's
Next? The Future of Logistics Technology-
Disruption and Automation," moderator
Adam Moreau, VP Operations, Strive
Logistics and Media Advisor for Food
Shippers of America, hosted a panel of
experts who explored the technological
developments facing the industry and
the speed at which new innovations
are arising.
Panelists included:
* Patrick Cook, Vice President of Sales,
Pride Transport
* Wendy Herrick, VP Supply Chain U.S.,
Unilever
* Dominick Tuccini, General Manager,
C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc.
The discussion ranged widely, from the
topic of digital freight matching to ELD
compliance and the likelihood that we
will see driverless trucks on the roads in
the next several years.
Conference attendees were treated
to lunch on the Ballroom Lawn before
reconvening in the Grand Canyon
Ballroom for the remaining sessions of
the day.

Don Durm
In the second session of the day,
moderator Don Durm, Vice President
of Customer Solutions at Rollins
College and author of How to Comply
with FSMA's Sanitary Transportation
of Human and Animal Food, led a
panel discussion titled "Addressing
FSMA and the Sanitary Transportation
Rule." Attendees were able to submit
to submit questions for the panelists
through the conference app.
