avigating disruption, mitigating risk and
planning for the unexpected are part of the
everyday for supply chain professionals.
These challenges are amplified when

dealing with perishables and food products.

Food shippers need to proactively
stay on top of trends both up and
downstream in order to compete in
today's ever-evolving marketplace.
Extreme weather events, increasing
regulations, emerging technologies and
changing consumer expectations can
all negatively impact a food shipper's
supply chain if they are not prepared.
We'll look into these challenges and
explore how industry leaders are
leveraging them into opportunities.

Weather
Weather, of course, has always had
a major impact on food production.
As food supplies become more
globalized, weather impacts not only
crop production but delivery. Weather
affects 30 percent of the U.S. gross
domestic product, according to the
Atmospheric and Environmental
Research Center. Snow storms,
hurricanes, wildfires and other extreme
weather events not only disrupt

freight flows but change consumer
demand, which further exacerbates
these issues. Demand can increase
ahead of, during and after an event
as consumers stock up and prepare.
When delivery becomes delayed or
impossible due to impassable roads,
track, sea or air, delays are inevitable,
and bottlenecks ensue. The limited
shelf life and storage requirements of
food and perishables leave this freight
especially vulnerable. Food shippers
must have a back-up plan if they hope
to serve their customers.
These issues are worldwide. Mexico
and Central America are becoming
big sources for produce. The issue of
climate change and whether growing
areas will be impacted makes it
important for food shippers and
receivers to be flexible.
