Food Shippers of America - Spring/Summer 2018 - 54

To meet these demands, Crowley
Logistics recently opened a second
cold storage warehouse, this time
in Jacksonville, Florida, serving as a
gateway for the company to service
the entire southeast with temperaturecontrolled distribution. This, like the
company's original CrowleyFresh cold
storage location in Miami, features
both humidity and temperaturecontrolled coolers capable of receiving,
storing and otherwise handling
perishables transiting between the
U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean,

with a host of other value-added
services, including export processing.
"Customers increasingly want
services that ensure speed to market,
whether they are on the commercial or
consumer side," explained Kimberly
Wakeman, VP, Customized Brokers.
"That market demand results in both
increased interest in reduced landed
time as well as having a single resource
for multiple services. Our Jacksonville
cold storage location is uniquely
suited as an in-transit consolidation/

A partnership between Crowley
Logistics and Customized Brokers
bundles individual cold-chain storage
and logistics offerings into one
comprehensive solution, including
customs brokerage, ocean and airfreight and trucking services; the two
warehouses offer over 400,000 total
cubic feet of refrigerated space and about
117,000 square feet of dry storage space
for non-perishables. The facilities offer
warehousing options for a diverse array
of cold-chain management services.
Shipping perishables requires careful
planning to ensure the most efficient
supply chain possible as product
is moved from processing plant to
warehouse to vessel to customs
clearance to cold storage facilities. The
industry is adding additional services
such as quality control and repackaging
that can maximize freshness while
reducing touching points that ensure
product velocity. Customers increasingly
benefit from considering the full suite
of services under a single source that
provides a comprehensive solution.

Today's North American rail network
offers food shippers "truck-like"
service at a lower cost due to
improved infrastructure, capacity and
productivity-enhancing technologies.
Shippers need a fully integrated supply
chain with access to alternative capacity
in order to mitigate risk. Shippers who
leverage multi-modal transportation
solutions are more likely to be
cushioned from disruptive impacts to
their networks and can enjoy significant
gains in revenue generated per hour of
operation. ■
