to its appeal to Millennials and GenZ,
concurs Frehse.
"At the end of each shift, they need
to feel a sense of accomplishment.
Unlike early generations, working
hard is simply not enough. Millennials
and GenZ do not have a problem
with working hard-if the work is
meaningful-yet, they both want to
have the power to make their own
decisions and drive results. If they feel
it's not possible to make an impact,
they will leave," he explains. "However,
seeing immediate value in your work
is challenging in the supply chain. It is
incredibly valuable to our society, but
that is difficult to see if you are sorting
packages or driving a lift truck in the
back of a warehouse."
That means employers will have
to change their approach, Frehse
continues. "First, these new
generations want to experience the
entire supply chain and see the product
all the way to the consumer to better
understand the customer fulfillment

process. Just moving the boxes is not
enough," he says. "Employers have a
responsibility to identify and socialize
how every role is important and why,
then constantly reinforce it with these
specific generations."
Second, Millennials and GenZ are (and
will be) better educated employees
than those of two or even three
decades ago, with many of them
having undergraduate degrees or
higher. "Companies are paying for the
hands and getting the head for free.
Wise leadership are always thinking
about how to leverage the intelligence
of their workforce by engaging them
in continual improvement projects,"
Frehse says. "That satisfies workers
individually and improves the company
as a whole. If these workers are
empowered to find better ways to run
the supply chain, they will be engaged
long after the improvements are made."
Third, Frehse adds, "without heavy
gamification of the logistics industry-
where employees can actually feel

they are winning-near term access
to qualified employees is going to
decrease. At the same time, jobs where
employees can't be engaged and
drive results will be automated. We're
already seeing this with truck drivers
and forklift operators."
Finally, many jobs within supply
chains-particularly shift work
scheduled around 12-hour shifts
arranged in a three-days-on/fourdays-off calendar-offer Millennials
and GenZ the workplace flexibility
they crave. "That type of schedule
accommodates the lives of these
employees and allows them to pursue
the projects they personally care
about," he notes.
Freeman has instituted similar
approaches at C.H. Robinson. "As a
culture, our company has put a great
deal of emphasis on many aspects that
are attractive to the best talent of those
generations," she says. "For example,
we strive to be a great corporate
citizen, and we let our employees
