capacity. Once identified, a "smart
contract" can be created and executed.
The smart contract essentially includes
all the relevant information needed
for pickup, delivery and payment. If
additional charges are needed, such
as accessorial or detention charges,
the smart contract could execute those
automatically if the conditions for such
charges are met.
Additional use cases can include
payment processing and settlement,
pricing transparency and transaction

recording, fraud detection and
theft prevention.
These use cases are just a small
sample of what's possible with
blockchain technology. They all
share a few common themes: trust,
transparency and speed.
One of the main problems in the
traditional supply chain is the lack of
trust between parties. Shippers often
do not know the trucking company
hauling their goods, and the trucking

company doesn't know the shipper.
That creates a layer of distrust. Add in
a broker, an end customer and maybe
even a factoring company or bank, and
the levels of trust disappear entirely.
In a blockchain environment, that
does not matter as long as each party
trusts the blockchain; it becomes the
central element of trust in the many
transactions that will take place.
Blockchain technology also
creates a never-before-seen level
of transparency. Each party to a
transaction can see all the transactions
that have occurred through the
blockchain, including whether a load
has been double brokered. Fraud is
reduced because all the transactions
are visible to each party and even
instances of cargo theft can be nearly
eliminated. A shipper will know if the
correct truck and driver has arrived
to pick up the load and will also know
immediately if that truck ventures out
of its route and why.
There are many more possible
scenarios, and that's where BiTA is
hoping to help. With hundreds of
companies joining the Alliance from
all touchpoints in the supply chain,
including software suppliers, the
opportunity to use blockchain will
continue to grow.
The question many have asked is what
do they need to do today? The reality
is, there are only a few blockchainenabled applications on the market
currently, although many companies
are now testing solutions with plans
to launch products this year. It is likely
that while you may not have use for
blockchain technology currently, it may
become a necessity at some point in
the near future.
The good news is that it may not
require much effort, as most of the
data that would be loaded onto a
blockchain is already data that most
fleets are collecting. The blockchain
just makes it more visible. And
with that visibility, more efficiency,
improved operational performance and
financial growth will occur. ■
