as trailer 'drop and hook' operations
began to gain traction some 20 years
ago." Carriers and shippers began
realizing at that time that they could
achieve greater efficiencies by having
drivers disconnect from loaded trailers
when they reached their destination,
and then immediately pick up another
loaded trailer and get back on the road.
"That phenomenon created a larger
number of trailers at distribution
and manufacturing centers, which
in turn created a greater need for
on-site management of those trailers,"
Wright added. As Lazer Spot proved
its capabilities at one site, customers
began asking them to provide those
same services at other sites in different
states. "As we began to build critical
mass, it made a lot of sense for those
customers to deal with one proven
supplier. Customers enjoy the benefits
of creating one contract nationally,
and that's only possible with a
company like ours because of our
geographic reach.
"That cross-country growth has not
only enabled Lazer Spot to better
serve its current customers, it has
also provided a platform to find and
serve more new customers as well,"
Wright said.

At the request of customers, Lazer Spot
has added what it calls short shuttle
service, which helps companies move
products from manufacturing centers
to nearby distribution centers. "Our
business model is that we will move
customer products up to 100 air miles
but no more; over that, we turn it over
to a traditional trucking company,"
Wright explained.
The emphasis is on being ultra
responsive to customers. If a customer
calls at 3 p.m. in the afternoon and says
it needs drivers and trucks at its location
at 8 a.m. the next morning, Lazer Spot is
usually able to meet its needs.
Lazer Spot's own fleet consists of
1,100 trucks and 2,600 trailers. The
company works in six primary market
sectors: consumer products, traditional
retailers, e-tailers, beverage, paper
and corrugated material, and food
products.
SAFETY IS FIRST
Drivers who want to work for Lazer
Spot are required to have a CDL. "We
conduct training with every new driver,
but we also want our drivers to have
experience driving commercial trucks.
We look for driver candidates with
knowledge on how to drive equipment

safely at our customer sites or on
public roads. Lazer Spot continuously
trains drivers on how to drive yard
spotters in the safest manner possible.
We've found that hiring professional
drivers with a CDL just works better for
our unique operating environment,"
said Wright. Some drivers are new to
the trucking industry, while others
may have driven on the road, but have
decided to try truck spotting because
they can be home with their families
every night.
While that's definitely a perk, driving
terminal tractors around facilities is
just as stressful as driving over the
road, and it requires very different
skills. "On many customer sites, there
will be hundreds of trailers parked in
spaces, and sometimes those trailers
are only two to four feet apart. Given
those close quarters, there's a little bit
of art in being able to back a 53-footlong trailer in with precision, and
doing it without hitting another trailer,
and then repeating that precision
dozens of times each day. It takes
training, practice and constant focus
on doing the job," Wright said.
Lazer Spot focuses much of its training
on keeping drivers safe, since they are
working in busy facilities where trucks
