in a click-and-mortar world.
They are benchmarking shopper
behaviors and determining the right
assortment levels and strategy for
each fulfillment model.
Applying these five tactics will
improve performance across
the value chain. Shoppers are
undeniably "calling the shots" at
retail. But the shots they are calling
vary greatly. Each core consumer
segment has unique wants, needs
and desires, which are usually
influenced by attributes such
as ethnicity, age, size of family,
household location, education,

income, etc. But evaluating shopper
behavior must extend beyond the
attribute level. We must understand
their life-stage and how they shop
products and banners. Are they
shopping full baskets in one store
and "filling-in" at some other store
or channel? Are they shopping center
store and buying meat and produce
elsewhere? Are they pantry-loading
products purchased on deals? Now
add in trends and the equations
become even more complex. Are they
buying natural and organic goods? If
not, at what price point would they
trade up to organic? Are they looking
for gluten-free products and products
made without artificial ingredients?

"Delivering dependable multi-temp LTL service
to more places, more often since 1947."

A short time ago, when everyone was
trying to be all things to all people,
these questions were irrelevant. The
sell-everything-everywhere model
didn't require a great deal of business
intelligence. The industry, as a whole,
is now paying for an approach that
failed to address specific-shopper
needs. Many trading partners, seeing
the writing on the wall, are learning to
use the momentum of change to their
advantage.
Limited-assortment stores, fresh
formats, localized assortment,
smaller case packs, prepared foods
and locally sourced goods are just a
few of the tactics being introduced to
align merchandising strategies with
evolving shopper behaviors. By doing
so, trading partners will increase
their relevancy at retail and restore
shopper loyalty. Additionally, they
will be better positioned to compete
in a click-and-mortar environment.
Even more importantly, a shoppercentric strategy will drive bottom-line
performance by improving inventory
positions, reducing out-of-stocks and
unsaleables, and minimizing
margin-eroding promotions. ■
