mentoring program does help facilitate
that," she said. "It also signals to people
who have been with the company for a
while that they should do something
like this."
Informal Opportunities
Many people prefer less structured
mentoring relationships. "For me,
informal mentoring programs work
better," said Lowe. "When people seek
you out or you seek other people out,
it shows a level of vulnerability. When
you do that, people typically will want
to open up to you."
Mentoring relationships work better
when the mentor and mentee already
have some sort of relationship. One
of Hrubes' most important mentors
was originally an executive of a
recruiting team that she worked on.
"I really appreciated his leadership
and delivery styles. Our team traveled
together, and during that time we
talked about different things in regard
to leadership," she said. They kept
in touch even when she moved to a

different department and he took a
new job, occasionally sending each
other articles of interest. They finally
arranged to meet for lunch on a
quarterly basis and continue to do so
to this day.
Hrubes' mentor also makes time to
meet with her on an as-needed basis.
"If I have a situation that comes up and
I need to know how to navigate through
it, I will go to him," she continued.
When she was uncertain what to do
about a job offer, for example, her
mentor gave her advice on how to
handle the situation.
Zipperer was fortunate to find a
very helpful mentor during her first
internship. "I had a manager there
who was very straightforward with
me about how to set up networking
and about the relationships that I
needed to try to form," she said. "I
was at that time still trying to figure
out which function in the business
world I wanted to focus on. He
gave me that guidance, and said,

'Whatever you pick, we are going
to be here and I will help you find
something in that area.'"
Mentoring relationships can take
several different forms. Zipperer
said that some people served as
mentors simply by being good role
models "I really learned a lot from my
informal relationships; I found myself
observing those people and trying to
learn how they did their work and how
I could apply that to my daily work,"
she said. While these mentoring
relationships didn't involve regular
meetings, Zipperer said the people
knew that she looked up to them and
were willing to provide their insights
whenever she asked them questions.
"They shaped a lot of ideas about
what career I would get into, or where
I saw myself down the line, or how I
could grow based on how this person
is doing it," she said.
Lowe has had both long-term and
short-term mentoring experiences.
"I have had very transactional

Trust your deadlines to 40 years of food shipping
The Syfan family has lived on deadline for over four decades. Based in the heart of

largest foodstuffs companies.
Today, Syfan Logistics and its fleet of Syfan Transport trucks are ranked in size and service
among the nation's top transportation companies. That kind of success is earned every day,
not just now and then. Why trust your deadlines to anyone less?
