can think about. I'll be there for you
as you go through this journey,'" Lowe
said.
"Be clear about the scope of what
you're asking for," he added. "You
don't want to go in to someone and
say, 'I have all these problems wrong
with my life,' because everybody has
problems with their life." He suggests
approaching a potential mentor with a
few specific questions about a problem
or situation.
"Listen to their response, see how
they react. If it fits, great; if it doesn't
fit, keep looking," Lowe advised. The
important thing is to keep trying until
you find the right person, because the
right mentoring relationship can be
very rewarding.
"A really good relationship happens
when it clicks; you can relate, you can
interchange back and forth, and you
can be blunt with one another,"
he added.

Making it Work
One way to gauge the success of a
mentoring relationship is by how open
the meetings are, said Van Wagner.
"Can the mentor and mentee trust
each other?" A mentee should be able
to freely share the successes and
challenges of the previous month, and
to discuss different techniques for
dealing with difficult situations.
"For me, the in-depth discussions on
my reactions in certain situations and
on how to respond better or differently
really helped my confidence. My
communication with senior
management greatly improved, and my
direction forward clarified," she added.
Gaining value from a mentoring
relationship can be more difficult when
the pool of mentors and mentees is
limited, or when mentors are arbitrarily
assigned. But those can be beneficial if
both parties are willing to work at it.
For the past three years, Cook has
been serving as a mentor for University

of Washington graduate students
working toward a degree in supply
chain and transportation logistics.
While he considers the program
generally successful, he had to work
harder to make a good connection
with his most recent mentee.
"My background is on the commercial
side of supply chain, while he
leaned more toward purchasing and
contracts; he probably would have
been better aligned with a mentor who
had a legal and finance background,"
Cook said.
The mentoring relationship was
further complicated by the fact that
the graduate student was taking the
course remotely, so he and Cook never
had the opportunity to meet
face-to-face. That limited the
opportunity to get to know the mentee
and to discover common interests
outside of the work environment. "If
it's all strictly mentoring, without
some balance of understanding who
the person is and what motivates
