them, you might miss some cues on how
you can be helpful to them," Cook added.
When it became clear that the mentor
relationship wasn't working, Cook
and his mentee did a mid-course
correction. Cook thought his mentee
would benefit from a broader view of
the industry to better understand how
contracts fit within the supply chain, so
he began sending him blogs, articles,
webinars and other information that
could help him stay in touch with
industry developments.

"We turned a nominal-value
relationship upwards pretty quickly,"
Cook said. "I'd send him something
and say, 'Think about how this relates
to what you're doing;' three out of four
contacts actually hit. We did make it
into a good relationship, but it was
more of a stretch, and took more
energy to find common ground."
Mentors should exchange expectations
with their mentees early in the
relationship, Cook said. "Tell them, 'I'm
volunteering my time, and I'm glad to

Hrubes says that mentees who don't
feel that they are benefiting from
an assigned mentor should try to
figure out why the relationship isn't
working. "You may be asking a lot of
questions about something and they
continue to direct the conversation
in a different way that you don't
think is valuable," she said. "But you
may want to consider what direction
they're heading in and if you should
be heading in that direction. Really
reflect on what you can learn from
that person. Maybe the reason it feels
awkward or that you're not connecting
is that you're not focused on the right
things."
