mentor/mentee relationship, if you're
learning on both sides."
Van Wagner likes to pair young
and established people together in
mentoring relationships. "It gives
you a different perspective when you
see somebody young who is coming
in, and they share the way they feel
about things. There are things that
we can learn and adapt to just by
listening to the younger people who
come into the organization."

Companies can help make mentoring
partnerships more productive by
making it easier for mentors and
mentees to get to know each other.
Mentor/mentee outings or fun activities,
for example, will give them the
opportunity to interact informally.
Businesses that want to be successful
in the future should encourage the
two-way information exchange
that takes place in good mentoring
partnerships. Mentor/mentee

interactions help members of younger
generations recognize the value
provided by people who have been
in the workplace 20 to 30 years, and
it helps seasoned employees adapt
to and take advantage of the new
technology and innovations that
young people seem to understand
instinctively.
"That's part of the give and take in
mentoring," said Lowe. "We owe it to
each other." ■

Creating a Mentoring Environment
Companies benefit when they create
an environment where mentoring
partnerships can thrive.
"It's really great for fostering
relationships within the company,
which can help with employee
retention," said Hrubes. "Plus, as a
mentor, you are focused on building
better people."

and experiences," added Van Wagner.
"Mentoring provides a really strong
support system for management,"
said Zipperer. "Management can
capture some aspects of growth
and development, but mentorship
targets things at an individual level.
Managers who have 15 subordinates
may not have the time to form the
individual relationships that people
need to feel an attachment to the
company, to feel like somebody is
really investing in them and to feel
that personal piece to their work life.
The mentorship relationship really
works there."
A real commitment to mentoring is
key. "One of the most important
things that companies can do is look
for people who generally have a
passion for mentoring," said Zipperer.
Some managers will volunteer to
mentor simply because they think it
looks good on their resumes; they
don't enjoy the experience, and
neither does the mentee.
