is Hard to Find

attending FSA conferences through
the years, I've heard many times
about key attributes of driving,
from decent wages to flexibility and
even the call of the open road - I-95
notwithstanding.
Telling that story today goes well
beyond a website and into the realm of
social media conversations.
A relatively small retailer I know in
Kentucky ran a fabulous promotion
during a recent summer holiday.
To play off the common cuisine
during barbecue season, the retailer
encouraged shoppers to send
photos and details of their personal
hamburger recipes. All entries were
posted on the company's Facebook
page and shoppers got to vote for
their favorites.

goals in mind. First, the promotion
resulted in customers sharing
recipes and stories. But even
better, it helped the retailer find
a wonderful source of bakers. The
competition eventually led to a
number of new hires and fabulous
community buzz about the bakery.
Trucking companies should consider
how to do the same, possible by
encouraging drivers to amplify the
message about their careers.
Imagine having drivers take photos
of some of their favorite spots to
see throughout the United States.
You might end up with a Facebook
or Instagram following of people
who are attracted by the open road
and with whom you can open up a
conversation about jobs.

The company reaped loads of free
publicity, hundreds of entries and
thousands of votes on its page - and
the total cost of the effort was a new
barbecue grill for the winner.

Likewise, you can use drivers to tell
their stories about why they love
their jobs. I bet every company can
find a significant group of current
drivers with great tales to tell.

Another retailer near Baltimore
staged a similar promotion around
cakes and other pastries with two

Approach these efforts in the
modern way, by helping drivers tell
their stories through social media

or YouTube. Today's young people
are scarcely reading newspapers, so
traditional ads won't ever find them.
Of course, there's no guarantee
such efforts will work, but in
today's environment these are the
very steps retailers use to attract
shoppers; they should be the
same ideas you use to attract your
audience. Engage them with new
methods. Remember, of course,
that we live in a transparent world.
So whatever you promise must be
grounded in reality.
If you need a reminder, just consider
the overnight sensation of Pokémon
Go as a demonstration of the power
of engagement mixed with modern
technology. You already have jobs
with stability, good pay and the call
of the road. And today they might
even find some interesting Pokémon
out there. ■
