with little regard for competitive
offers or price elasticities on knownvalue items (KVIs).
New Approach: Use unique shopper
IDs to develop targeted promotions
that focus on the three Rs: reach,
reward and retention. This approach
will help prevent "cherry picking,"
which is when shoppers only buy
products on deal and don't shop
the entire store. Additionally,
personalized promotions increase
basket size and basket ring, while
creating banner loyalty.
4. Managing Out-of-Stocks and
Unsaleables
Old Thinking: Expand brand
presence by introducing line
extensions for proven products in
place of real product innovations
- not a surprising approach given
the failure rates of most new items.
Line extensions certainly have their
place; however, they exacerbate
the tendency to be all things to all
people due to "force-outs" and

related incentives that strive for
100 percent ACV (All Commodity
Volume). In turn, this fills supply
lines as shoppers swap purchases
instead of making incremental
purchases. For example, tuna
packed in coconut water and sold
in pouches (you heard it here first)
hits the retailer's shelves. The
product does well, but doesn't
increase consumption or attract
new shoppers to the category. This
type of cannibalization merely
adds costs, increases unsaleables
and out-of-stocks, which can be
as high as 13 percent on promoted
items.
In this example, the retailer has
little to gain. The manufacturer
may capture purchases from
competing brands; however,
cannibalization is likely to occur
within the brand's portfolio of
products.
New Approach: Trading partners
are broadening their performance
metrics beyond shipments and
consumption mea surements by

extracting insights hidden in
their existing datasets. Working
collaboratively, companies
can make better decisions in
terms of inventory positions,
true profitability and shopper
relevancy. For example, adjusting
front-end planograms based on
traffic and consumption rates
may require full sets for lanes
one through eight, while the
other lanes are merchandised
with fewer SKUs and offer products with extended shelf life.
5. eCommerce
Old Thinking: eCommerce,
at 4 percent of store sales, is
insignificant.
New Approach: eCommerce
is growing 20 percent yearover-year and some banners
will double their online
sales this year. Retailers and
manufacturers, particularly early
adopters, are not only growing
at disproportionate rates, they
are better equipped to compete
