be home with their families, and in the food industry and the
trucking business, that's not the way it is."
Patrick Boss, spokesman for Atlanta-based Infinity
Transportation Logistics, says his company has been affected
by the driver shortage, but benefits from its intermodal
shipping model, which only requires drivers to make short
trips and allows them to have a more regular work schedule.

Drivers pick up frozen items such as French fries, concentrated
fruit juice and fruits and vegetables from food manufacturers
and drive them to rail ramps, where the containers are moved
onto trains for long-distance trips. When the long-haul portion
of the trip is complete, drivers pick up the containers and
deliver them to local supermarkets, fast-food restaurants
or food manufacturers. The location and temperature of the
containers are monitored by satellite.
"The advantage of the intermodal model is that these drivers
are not under long-haul trucking requirements," Boss says.
"It's only a two- to three-hour drive. These drivers can take the
product to the rail ramp and be home that evening, so they're
not having to be gone overnight and are able to get home
to their families. The short-haul sector is feeling (the driver
shortage) less, there's no doubt about that."
Complicating matters for specialty carriers are the requirement
for a tanker endorsement for drivers delivering liquid goods
and the additional training necessary to carry liquid or dry
bulk products. In addition, some drivers will not want the
responsibility of monitoring the unloading process for bulk
deliveries or checking the temperature and running cooling
equipment on refrigerated deliveries.

America's newest name in
refrigerated transportation.
* Asset-based, national truckload coverage, plus
a Logistics Brokerage option
* Temperature-controlled freight and other
protected cargoes
* Skilled transport experts, modern fleets,
advanced technologies
* A diverse customer base of manufacturers and
food producers
* Simplify transportation, reduce risk, hold the
line on freight costs

"Recruiting and developing drivers to perform job functions
outside of the normal driving duties can be challenging," says
Todd Holt, president of transportation for Cherry Hill, NJ-based
NFI Industries. "As in any industry, NFI looks for the right
individuals for our team and then works with them to develop
the skills needed to satisfy the requirements of the job."
"It's a little different to drive down the road with 5,000 gallons
of liquid that could potentially slosh, vs. a van in which
products could shift here and there," says Brillhart.
With the driver shortage limiting specialty carriers' capacity,
those companies are working closely with food manufacturers
and other customers to find efficiencies in the scheduling of
pickups and deliveries.
Brillhart says that a given trucking terminal may have 35
loads to deliver one day and 14 the next day, so he's working
with customers to see if the schedules can be evened out,
allowing the carrier to maximize the use of its manpower and
equipment. Many customers won't be able to shift shipments
or deliveries up or back a day or two, or even adjust the time
of day for pickups and deliveries, but any flexibility afforded
