to carriers can make a difference in
overall capacity.
The collaborative effort shows
shippers that their carriers are being
proactive in addressing capacity
issues, which can help manage their
expectations and make them more
understanding when capacity is
limited, Brillhart says.
"Right now, the best thing that we're
doing [to maximize capacity] is working
with our customers to see if there is

flexibility on hours of operation so that
we can work together and find those
areas where we may be able to drive
asset utilization up, which reduces
the number of drivers you need," he
explains. "We often sit around a table
together and discuss the needs of the
shipper, the end user and us to see if
we can come to a happy medium.
"You've got to be engaged, and you've
got to look for solutions because
there's no easy answer. If we have
more loads than we can handle, that

doesn't change just because the
customer is screaming."
Boss says Infinity Transportation
Logistics also has long-term
relationships with small and large
independent trucking companies that
can be called upon during especially
busy times, and those carriers are
much more likely to accept a short-haul
job than a long-haul one.
"It's easier to find short-haul
equipment, but that doesn't mean
things don't tighten up," Boss says.
For long-haul carriers, there is a
shallow pool of independent carriers to
pitch in during a rush.
"In the past, you could bring in outside
help during the surges, but with the
driver shortage, that has dwindled
away in the bulk industry, liquid and
dry, to almost being nonexistent,"
Brillhart says. "We're still able to in
certain areas and at certain times, but
it's nowhere like it used to be 15 to 20
years ago, and I think that's catching a
lot of people off guard."
Brillhart said that aside from making
it clear to potential drivers that they
would make a good living in the
industry, there is very little specialized
carriers can do to lure more talent.
He said the company takes the time
to explain "the good, the bad and the
ugly" about what the job entails to
ensure that the company doesn't waste
time and resources training individuals
who won't stay in the industry. That
may prevent some drivers from signing
on, but it also reduces costly turnover.
"We're always looking to figure out
ways that we can hire drivers, but as
far as finding a silver bullet, we haven't
found it," Brillhart says.
Aside from hiring drivers, one priority
for specialized carriers is investing
in and maintaining the equipment
they operate. Bill Mahoney, vice
president of sales for NFI Industries,
says the company owns a network
of maintenance facilities that keeps
