the legitimacy of a product by tracing
it from its point of origin to the retailer
where the consumer bought it.

down from 40 to 10," said McDermott.
"Getting that first 75 percent of the
problem just by looking at the right
information is huge."
Adding Visibility
Transparency is another important
element of blockchains. Blockchain
technology could provide
unprecedented end-to-end visibility
throughout the supply chain. Anyone
with access to the public key and
blockchain reading software could see
the history of a product. That could
stretch all the way from the raw material
used in its manufacture to its sale at a
retailer, although blockchains can be
created at any point in the supply chain.

Retailers could even use the
availability of a blockchain record as a
sales advantage. "Suppose company
A says I will sell you this Prada bag
for $1,000. Company B says I'm going
to sell you the same Prada bag for
$1,400, but [with blockchain] I can
assure you and give you its entire
pedigree. Do I now trust the $1,000
bag or do I trust the $1,400 bag? It's

a unique selling proposition built on
trust," Schwebel added.
Extended visibility is especially
important for the food and
pharmaceuticals industries. In China,
Walmart is collaborating with IBM and
Tsinghua University on a pilot program
to determine if blockchain technology
could quickly identify sources of food
contamination. The blockchains will
provide information into the way
that the food-in this case, pork-is
tracked, transported and sold. Each

The company that creates the
blockchain would attach a unique
identifier-actually the blockchain
public key-to every item, case,
pallet or crate. Every time someone
moves or changes the item or makes
a financial transaction concerning it,
that information would become part of
the blockchain. The blockchain record
would grow as the item makes its way
through the supply chain.
The ability to track and trace a product
adds an extra level of value for a
consumer, said David Schwebel, senior
director, business development of
Swisslog. Restaurants could encourage
patrons to use a blockchain reader
app on their cell phone so they can see
for themselves that the salmon they
ordered is really wild caught. Parents
concerned about a car seat recall could
scan the seat's blockchain identifier
to see if it came from the affected lot
or factory.
Blockchain could address consumers'
uncertainties about product
authenticity. "There's a big concern,
especially with the rise of ecommerce,
over buying legitimate products,"
said Rick Fox, president/CEO of FOX
IV Technologies Inc. "If you look at
the lawsuits, I think the ecommerce
companies will be held financially
responsible for providing a product
that's counterfeit." Blockchain would
be the perfect technology to confirm
